Biographical Sketch (200 words or less) | Sonya G. Harris graduated from Gannon University in Erie, PA, pursued graduate study at New York Institute of Technology, and was employed by Atlantic County for 40 years, retiring in 2023. Sonya discovered the arts early in life through her mother’s love of music. Music was a constant in her home whether it was her mother playing piano, singing in her beautiful tenor voice, or listening to her vast collection of albums. Sonya began her musical journey as a clarinetist. She played in the marching band, orchestra, and jazz ensemble. Her passion also extends to the visual arts through a personal art collection of both established and emerging artists. As a member of the Atlantic City (NJ) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Sonya has served as Arts Facet Chair since 2018, coordinating seven annual Black History Art Shows (virtually during the pandemic) and three National Poster Art Contests. Sonya is the proud mother of two adult children, four beautiful grandchildren, and the fiancé of Leon Baptist, Sr. Through art, Sonya finds inspiration in each brushstroke, solace in the fluid movements of dance, intrigue in the captivating narratives woven in theatrical arts, and joy in the graceful elegance of ballet. |
